Meet Ilya Barmotin
Ilya Barmotin began his ballroom dancing journey at the age of nine, quickly establishing himself as a leading junior and amateur competitor. He won major competitions throughout the United States and Canada, reached the finals of major North American championships, and earned 3rd place at the United States National Formation Championships in Provo, Utah, as part of the NY/NJ Formation Team. He later represented the United States internationally, placing in the Top 10 at the International Championships in Berlin, Germany.
Beyond the competitive floor, Ilya has been featured in numerous shows and festivals, including appearances as a principal dancer in nationally televised commercials and on programs such as Good Morning America.
Following his competitive career, Ilya devoted himself to teaching, mentorship, and the development of the next generation of dancers. Starting with just 20 students, he built Basic Ballroom into a highly respected dance studio over the course of 18 years, helping develop numerous regional and national champions whose achievements include more than 30 national titles.
Ilya also organizes the Islanders Dancesport Challenge, providing a platform for dancers to compete, grow, and celebrate the art of Dancesport. Through his continued dedication to education and mentorship, he has made a lasting contribution to the Dancesport community and the dancers he has guided throughout his career.
